15848 Low Leak Test
The leakage of valves can be divided into internal leakage and external leakage. The consequences of external leakage of valves with toxic, flammable and explosive media are more serious than internal leakage。The leakage of the valve is mainly introduced here. With the increasing awareness of safety and environmental protection, the requirements for the allowable leakage level of toxic, flammable and explosive media in petrochemical plants are becoming more and more strict. As an indispensable equipment in petrochemical plants, valves are one of the main sources of leakage in the plants due to their large variety and quantity, so the requirements for valve leakage are crucial。The low leakage of the valve refers to the small leakage, which can not be determined by conventional water pressure and air pressure seal tests, and requires more advanced means and instruments to detect. This small leakage of the valve to the external environment is called low leakage;

Test standard:

ISO 15848-1 specifies a test procedure for evaluating external leakage from stem seals (or shafts) and body joints of isolation and control valves for volatile air pollutants and hazardous fluids。ISO 15848-1:2005 does not cover end connection joints, vacuum applications, corrosion and radiation effects. ISO 15848-1 Classification system and qualification procedure for type testing of valves。

ISO 15848-2 specifies a test procedure for evaluating external leakage from the stem or shaft and body joints of isolation and control valves for volatile air pollutants and hazardous fluids。This part of ISO 15848-2 does not cover end connection joints, vacuum applications, corrosion effects and radiation. The production acceptance test is applicable to standard production valves with unorganized emission standards。

Within the framework of ISO 15848, the entire industrial valve including valve body seals will be type tested。

ISO15848 type test classifies complete industrial valves into pressure, temperature, durability and sealing classes。

The requirements of the ISO type test are very specific and detailed, so the test duration of the complete ISO 15848 type test takes 1 to 2 weeks。

ISO 15848 "Industrial valves - Procedures for the measurement, testing and qualification of fugitive emissions" consists of two parts:

Part 1: Classification system and qualification procedure for type test of industrial valves: three sealing classes are distinguished here: A, B and C. Class A has the smallest environmental leakage。

Part 2: Production acceptance test of industrial valves: This test can only be carried out on products that have successfully completed the first part of the test. The leak was tested at room temperature using helium leak detection without mechanical influence

At present, the commonly used international standards for detecting low leakage of valves mainly include the following

1、International API 624-2014 Type Testing of Graphite Packed Lift Lever Valves

2、EPA EPA Method21 Volatile Organic Component Leakage Detection

3、ISO 15848 Industrial valves: low leakage measurement, testing and qualification procedures

4、SHELLMESSPE77/312 industrial valves of Shell Petroleum Company: low leakage measurement, classification system, qualification procedure, type approval and product test of on-off valves and control valves

Significance of low leakage:

The progress of valve micro leakage detection technology is conducive to valve manufacturing and import and export tradeThe vacuum method of valve micro leakage type test provides a reliable means for measuring the weight of micro leakage at the valve body end and the valve stem sealing part. The test accessories provide a guarantee for the improvement and implementation of the test, and expand the research foundation of valve stem (static and dynamic) sealing mechanism and valve stem sealing structure failure under the conditions of different pressures, temperatures, high and low temperatures) and mechanical cycles, It provides a scientific basis for the optimization of valve micro leakage seal structure design and the selection of sealing materials
